February 18, 2010 - Edition Number 75
From the Pastor

amy spinlderDear Friends,
I'm still basking in a great Lord's Day at Christ Community Church last Sunday.  After a good morning together, a (wonderfully) record-setting crowd came out for our Sunday Supper.  Thanks to Morgan Jones, Lou Weile, Michael Hallisey, Mike Cline, Bob Poovey, James Dickson, Helen Alburo, Jeremy Frens, Frank Glenn, Ken Kunkel, Noah Forlines, Dirk Munson, Jeff Butler, and Grayson Butler (plus a few I've probably missed) for your hard work in serving the rest of us through the meal.  I greatly regret that we did not record Jim, Rachel, and Josh Van Eerden's sharing of the story of the adoption of the newest Van Eerden, their son Edison.  As Jim's father, Dick, poignantly said at the end of the evening, Edison's extra chromosome is the "love chromosome."  We are a richer congregation because of Edison's being a part of our body here.

By now, you may have noticed the announcement in the past several weeks' bulletins about the women's brunch coming up on Saturday, February 27.  After a quiet period, our women's ministry is gearing back up for a more engaged and intentional season.  It has been exciting to observe both older and younger women, longtime members and some of our newest attenders, all coming together to plan the brunch, as well as to begin to dream about how women's discipleship and nurturing at Christ Community Church might look in the years to come.  If you have not signed up yet, please email Amy Munson.

Why is gender-specific ministry to women important to Christ Community Church?  Well, Susan Hunt and my friend, Ligon Duncan, answered that question very helpfully in their book Women's Ministry in the Local Church:

  • First, women's ministry is important because through it we have the opportunity to address helpfully the issue of the nature of manhood and womanhood, an issue that is very much at the heart of the cultural transition that we find ourselves in the midst of right now.
  •  Second, it is important that we have a deliberate, intentional ministry to women in the church because the Bible teaches so much and so clearly on manhood and womanhood.... Without in any way discounting the regular pulpit ministry of the church, we should recognize that there are certain matters more aptly addressed and applied in the context of a specific discipleship of women, whether in large groups, or in situations of confidentiality, as women minister to women.
  •  Third, women's ministry is important because when biblical manhood or womanhood are denied or altered or unpracticed, that results in disasters for marriages, families, and churches.
  •  Fourth, we ought to have an intentional, deliberate approach to female discipleship because men and women are different, and these differences need to be recognized, taken into account, and addressed in the course of Christian discipleship.
  •  Fifth, the denial or the twisting of the Bible's clear teaching on manhood and womanhood is one of the central ways that biblical authority is being undermined in our times.

The authors conclude, "The church must boldly articulate a robustly positive perspective of womanhood and of women's role in the church, and the church must equip godly older women to disciple younger women to think and live according to this perspective. If a local church remains silent on this issue, women are unequipped to fulfill their covenantal calling."

We want very much for our women to be blessed and equipped to be a blessing to one another and to the women of our community. In looking to those goals for women's ministry, Janet Hurd and Mandy Crotts have stepped forward to provide interim leadership. If you have an interest in helping them, want to pass along suggestions, or simply want to encourage them in this important work, you can email or call them.

This Sunday morning, we will continue our five-week series on worship.  Last Sunday, we looked at Isaiah 44:6-23, focusing on the folly of idolatry and the call for us to worship the Lord as the Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer.  This week, we will move through Psalm 27 and the real-life picture it gives us of true worship amid the struggles and challenges of life in this fallen world.  I hope to see you then.

Your friend,

A New Face Coming to Christ Community

We've all no doubt heard the saying, "Many hands make light work."  And such is true in the Gospel ministry of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ.  The ministry of the church is not an easily completed task.  Generally, ministry is messy (that's because it's full of people) and is unfinished (that's because God is not finished saving us).  And so ministry, to use another familiar phrase, requires "all hands on deck".  One of the goals of Christ Community Church, stated in our Mission, Vision and Values, is to have a lasting impact on the Kingdom of God by making disciples.  To that end, we need capable Bible teachers to impart what God has been teaching them to others who desire to grow.  We make disciples from the pulpit, when talking of the Word one-on-one with others, and as we raise our little ones in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.  God uses each of us to make disciples, however, one of the victory spoils of the cross (Ephesians 4) is the gift of the pastor-teacher to the church.  Ministers are not born, but made!  Much like a medical student needs an internship or a residency for the completion of his studies, ministerial students need on-the-job training for their futures in church ministry.

Mackay SmithFor some time a young fellow has been asking Bill & Bryan for the chance to work with all of us in ministry, to gain some experience, test his gifts, and to find direction for his future after seminary.  We can certainly use another set of hands around here and it is the church's duty to see her future placed in good hands by training up the next generation of ministers - it would be irresponsible, in fact, to not do so!  Mackay Smith will be coming to us on Saturday, March 13 to begin work with us in an internship agreement that has been worked out and approved by the Session.  He comes from First A.R.P. Church in Gastonia, is an Erskine College graduate, began his seminary studies at Westminster in Philadelphia, and plans to complete his Master of Divinity at Reformed Seminary in Charlotte spring 2011.  Mackay is a fine young man, has excellent potential for great service both at CCC and in the church of the Lord Jesus Christ.  He will work with Ashley in our youth program and alongside Bill, Bryan, James and Ken in general pastoral duties.  And he will spend time completing his studies for ministry.

Willis, Morgan, Art, Lou and others have been preparing the 5920 Netfield house for his living quarters.  He will be moving up on Saturday, March 13 and we will introduce him the next day in worship.  Mandy Crotts is preparing a gift basket for him - see her if you would like to offer a gift certificate to a place of local interest - coffee, burgers, groceries, Wal-Mart and the like.  Let's together look forward to his coming and watching a young man grow in his preparation for Gospel ministry.

11:4 Group: What is the 11:4 Group? Hebrews 11:4 speaks of Abel and says, "though he died, he still speaks."  A new men's small group will be starting in a few weeks in order to read short excerpts of the writings of our fathers (and mothers!) in the faith and meet to better understand their wisdom and apply it in our lives.  God has given us a rich spiritual heritage through the record of how His Spirit has moved through the centuries.  We have a treasure in old books that can give us a perspective on the Christian life very different from our own generation's and, sometimes, vastly more helpful.  This won't be hard literature.  Instead, we will read short, understandable pages and listen together to the record of how God worked in our spiritual ancestors.  The goal is to learn from them and grow together in Christ. The group's meeting time and day will be determined based on the availability of those interested.   If you would like to know more, contact Bill Marsh.

To Prepare for the Lord's Day Worship

Sunday's Sermon: "Worship Service or Surface Worship"   Rev. Bill Marsh

Read to prepare for the Call to Worship:  Psalm 118:1-4, 24

Confession of Faith
Apostles Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,  and born of the virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.
Communion, also called the Lord's Supper, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all followers of Jesus Christ to participate. If you are not a follower of Jesus or are not prepared to share in the meal, please feel free to spend  this time in prayer rather than participating in the meal. We hope this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

Food for Thought

Is it a small thing in your eyes to be loved by God - to be the son, the
spouse, the love, the delight of the King of glory? Christian, believe
this, and think about it: you will be eternally embraced in the arms of
the love which was from everlasting, and will extend to everlasting - of
the love which brought the Son of God's love from heaven to earth, from
earth to the cross, from the cross to the grave, from the grave to glory
- that love which was weary, hungry, tempted, scorned, scourged,
buffeted, spat upon, crucified, pierced - which fasted, prayed, taught,
healed, wept, sweated, bled, died. That love will eternally embrace you.
