March 26, 2010 - Edition Number 80 |
| From the Pastor
|
Dear Friends,
Do you cultivate an attitude of thanksgiving?
If we understand the grace of God in Christ Jesus, our expectations of what we are owed or think we should have will be very different from the innate sense of entitlement we have as human beings. We are born in sin and part of that sin nature is believing that the world should revolve around us and that the chief end of the rest of the world is our glory and its attendant comforts. On the other hand, when we understand the love of the perfectly obedient Jesus Christ, who lays down his life for self-centered people like us, we begin to see more clearly that we are owed nothing (at least nothing good, anyway!). Seeing a God who did not spare His own Son, but graciously gave Him up for us all (Romans 8:32) changes our perspective on how things should be, what I should have, and even the axis of the world's rotation (maybe it shouldn't revolve around me, after all). Instead of murmuring or even whining about what we don't have, we instead come to see how much God has blessed us beyond what we could ask or think (Ephesians 3:20), much less what we should expect.
All of this is on my mind now as we have much for which we can be thankful at Christ Community Church. The Lord owes us nothing! Indeed, we deserve something, but it is not something good and pleasant. Instead, though, He has blessed us with many good things. Let me tick off a few to prime the pump of your own gratitude:
ˇ After our recent discussions about facility costs and our church budget, the Lord prompted you to give over $21,000 last week on the third Sunday of the month. This is roughly double the amount we ordinarily receive on a third Sunday.
ˇ I'm grateful to elders who are working hard in weekly meetings to lead our congregation through challenges, even while they lead us in many of the good things going on here. Oh, and don't forget this is along with their responsibilities as fathers, husbands, and employees.
ˇ I'm grateful for our deacons, who have stepped up so ably in organizing our Sunday Suppers, as well as handling many other matters for the elders. For instance, one of the deacons is always here early on Sunday mornings to start unlocking doors and then stays until everyone else leaves to make sure the building is secured.
ˇ Willis Drew has volunteered probably half of his weekday hours for the past year to maintain our facility and grounds. With 66,000 square feet and 46 acres of property, something always needs to be done. Willis has set up and taken down more chairs in the past year than probably the rest of his life combined. My standing answer to most questions around here regarding the building or something in it is, "You'd better ask Willis that question."
ˇ Mae Andrews is on her second tour of duty as our bookkeeper and interim treasurer. She spends many days here each month and manages to keep all of our financial records up to date, our bills and employees paid, and critical information going out to the church's leaders. As a semi-retired CPA, she does all of this with great precision and skill. As a godly woman, she does all of this with great kindness and joy.
ˇ The Lord has brought a great staff to our church. Ashley Donovan continues her good work in our youth ministry and is now supplemented by the recent addition of Mackay Smith as a seminary intern. Debbie Cain keeps our children's ministry humming. Amy Munson supports us all in the church office and her name is the first one we call when anything office-wise needs a response, from a paper jam in the copier to a bulletin announcement to a ringing telephone. James Dickson is ably leading our men's small groups and fellowship opportunities as he prepares for ministry through his studies at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte. Bryan Crotts has quickly become an essential part of our church in his 4-1/2 months here as Associate Pastor.
ˇ Morgan and Marilyn Jones are here every Sunday morning by 8 o'clock to make the coffee and other refreshments for us to enjoy later in the morning. They then quietly put everything away later in the day.
ˇ Since I am busy in other parts of the buildings at the time, I never get to see-or thank -our children's Sunday School teachers or our nursery workers. They are in their places each week, faithfully teaching, consoling, and caring for the children of this church.
ˇ Our band and choir members make a joyful noise to the Lord each week in their rehearsals as well as on Sunday mornings. They are offering up their talents and time to help us worship God in spirit and truth.
ˇ Finally, for now, I am reminded of the inaugural season of our Upward Basketball outreach ministry to the community. Mark Smith, Chad Montgomery, Colin Streng, and a host of volunteers too numerous to list served quietly, vigorously, and effectively to better connect us to our community and communicate the content of the Gospel to the children and families involved.
Time and space don't allow me to continue, though I could come up with this many more in little time. Think on these folks and their service and then thank the Lord for His leading them toward these ministry areas. Resolve to spend time each day thanking God for the blessings of salvation in Christ, His fatherly provision for all of our needs, and the Spirit's work in keeping us in Christ to the end. The Lord is at work at Christ Community Church!
With thanksgiving for you, I am
Your friend, | |

| Thank you from Mackay |
To the family of Christ Community Church,
My grandfather taught me a very important lesson about gratitude. He was a very generous person. Often, he would hand me a $20 bill for no reason or offer to fill up my gas tank, but I would always balk at his benevolence. Correcting my pride, he was quick to nip it in the bud and to say, "Mackay, just say 'thank you.' Let people show that they care about you."
As hard as it is for a guy like me, I have tried to remember that lesson. However, since I arrived in Greensboro, the overwhelming welcome I have received from all of you has really put me to the test! From the countless man-hours improving my new living quarters; to the new plants, food, and gift certificates that were waiting on me when I arrived; to the openness of so many inviting me to their homes... I can only say thank you for already being an incarnation of God's limitless grace to me.
I'm thrilled to be here at CCC. I look forward to growing closer to Christ's likeness alongside all of you. Praise God that he has allowed me to come labor among people so determined to be the light of the world. All that's left, I guess, is to do what my grandfather always told me: Thank you!
Sincerely,
Mackay Smith |

| Thank You from Children's Ministry |
| The Children's Ministry "Re-New" Spring Consignment Sale was a huge success this past Saturday. There were 4,423 items sold. Our sales were $13,929.25 with $4,570.52 of that going to benefit Children's Ministry. We had 50+ volunteers helping with the sale throughout the 3 days of setting up and the day of the sale. The Consignment Sale Team was led by Julie Streng. Team members are Michele Moyer, Nikki Neuman, Pam French, Shelley Armitage, Toni Montgomery and Debbie Cain. Robin Butler was also there for us. What a wonderful team to work with for 4 long days. Thank you Julie for your strong leadership of the team and sale and thank you each team member for the part you played in the success of the sale. The moneys earned in the past sales have been used to have the beautiful murals painted in the children's wing and to sponsor "Upward Basketball" this past winter. We are looking forward to our fall sale on September 11th.

| Introducing New Members |
The Robinsons:
David, Ellen, and the kids were born and raised in Greensboro and the surrounding area. They enjoy the mountains, the beach, Robinson road trips (RRT's), cookouts, being with friends and family, reading, watching good movies, going to ballgames, and fishing. They are excited about joining CCC because we really look forward to Sundays and to both corporate worship and fellowship, because we believe the vision of the church is biblically sound and is being well communicated, because we believe that the Lord is leading and blessing the ministry of CCC, and because we are confident that CCC will be our long term church home.
The Conrads write:
We are excited to be apart of the Christ Community Church family and are looking forward to great fellowship, worship and spiritual growth. We are originally from NC and have been in the Greensboro area for the last 10 years. The Lord has richly blessed us with 5 girls and 3 boys. Pictured are Sarah(18), Emily(15), Hannah(12), Samuel(9) and Abigail(7). David works at Honda Aircraft as an engineer and Amy is a stay at home mom. We enjoy activities such as camping, BBQ's, traveling and spending time with one another. |

Call to Worship: Psalm 96:1-4
Confession of Faith: WLC Questions #47-#50
Q. 46. What was the estate of Christ's humiliation? A. The estate of Christ's humiliation was that low condition, wherein he for our sakes, emptying himself of his glory, took upon him the form of a servant, in his conception and birth, life, death, and after his death, until his resurrection.1
Q. 47. How did Christ humble himself in his conception and birth? A. Christ humbled himself in his conception and birth, in that, being from all eternity the Son of God, in the bosom of the Father, he was pleased in the fulness of time to become the son of man, made of a woman of low estate, and to be born of her; with many circumstances of more than ordinary abasement.2
Q. 48. How did Christ humble himself in his life? A. Christ humbled himself in his life, by subjecting himself to the law,3 which he perfectly fulfilled; 4 and by conflicting with the indignities of the world, 5 temptations of Satan, 6 and infirmities in his flesh, whether common to the nature of man, or particularly accompanying his low condition.7
Q. 49. How did Christ humble himself in his death?
A. Christ humbled himself in his death, in that having been betrayed by Judas, 8 forsaken by his disciples 9scorned and rejected by the world 10 condemned by Pilate, and tormented by his persecutors11 having also conflicted with the terrors of death, and the powers of darkness, felt and borne the weight of God's wrath12 he laid down his life an offering for sin13 enduring the painful, shameful, and cursed death of the cross.14
Q. 50. Wherein consisted Christ's humiliation after his death?
A. Christ's humiliation after his death consisted in his being buried15 and continuing in the state of the dead, and under the power of death till the third day;16 which has been expressed in these words, He descended into hell.

| Food For Thought |
"My feelings are not God. God is God. My feelings do not define truth. God's word defines truth. My feelings are echoes and responses to what my mind perceives. And sometimes--many times--my feelings are out of sync with the truth. When that happens--and it happens every day in some measure--I try not to bend the truth to justify my imperfect feelings, but rather, I plead with God: Purify my perceptions of your truth and transform my feelings so that they are in sync with the truth."
John Piper, Finally Alive, pages 165-166.
